To analyze crime scene evidence using a variety of techniques including chemical, microscopic, chromatographic and comparative techniques and instrumentation. Identify and evaluate physical evidence which may include controlled, dangerous substances such as blood, urine and other biological specimens. Prepares detailed technical written reports. Prepares exhibits for courtroom use and provides expert testimony. Remains current on scientific advancements in the forensic field. Instructs law enforcement personnel in training schools in laboratory procedures. Perform other job related duties as assigned. Some handling of and exposure to hazardous materials, bodily fluids, and chemicals. Work requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting. Moderate to heavy lifting is required at times. Knowledge of the principles and analytical procedures of chemistry, biology (including molecular biology), toxicology, criminalistics or related sciences. Knowledge of the uses and effects of controlled substances. Knowledge of crime scene procedures, the statutes and case law applicable to assigned forensic discipline and rules of criminal procedure. Ability to define problems, establish facts, interpret information and draw valid scientific conclusions. Ability to chemically identify and quantitate compounds such as drugs, diluents and poisons. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with the major course of study in chemistry or other closely related physical or natural sciences with a minimum of forty (40) semester hours in chemistry and a minimum of one (1) year experience in a blood alcohol related field including operation of a gas chromatograph. Successful completion of a proficiency test in the field of blood alcohol is also required.
